40 cm, not too high, but I guess high enough to make you choose a way past them, without riding around them. Jump them, dismount and run over them, or crash into them.

If you can launch over them, that's great. But what if you blow it? You'll be down on the ground, possibly, with all the humiliation that can go with it, and possibly something broken or bruised.

Crashing into the barriers happens anyway, but usually not planned. What if you just keep pedalling and nail it hard? What will give first- wheel, fork, or barrier? I've heard at UCI events, the barriers are "staked" into position; that would be similar to hitting a wall, except you'd be able to go over the bars.

So, if you either don't make the hop or find yourself ramming the barrier at speed, should you let go of your bike during the crash onset? There's a chance you could pull off one of those miraculous crashes where you end up on the bike again and ride off, making it look like you meant to do it.

What would Ponytail Man do? When I crash, my bike seems to hit me in the back of the head somehow. Maybe I should hold on, and try to roll back up onto the seat and pedal off. I've got to learn that trick!

for those that were there let us remember what happened to callum when he tried just crashing in to it. it ended with a hood to the face and the end of his race.

If they are really solid sometimes they will let you ride over them as if it were a big log in on a MTB. You put your front wheel on the hurdle and then lever the rear of the bike up as you ride over. I did a race in KC where a few guys were doing this. The hurdles were probably about 30cm. You can't do this going very fast.
I saw a guy clear a really big log (45cm?) years ago in a MTB race in Waco, TX by hopping as high as he could and then kissing the log with his front wheel, which catapulted his bike high enough to clear the rest of the log. I have never gotten very good at this, though I have tried. It is really hard, as you have to be going pretty fast, (which is sketchy) then you have to nail the log at just the right height. I think I have finally come to the conclsion that the guy I saw just blew his bunnyhop and managed a very lucky save. Man it looked cool tho. I have managed to sort of do this a few times on hurdles, but never on purpose.
